Models
F-4B
The first model, developed directly from the prototype. The US Navy was the sole client, buying all 649 planes manufactured. The Navy deployed them aboard aircraft-carriers, as missile-armed interceptors for defending the Navy's ships and supply convoys.
F-4C
583 planes of this model were purchased initially. These were F-4B's that had been refitted for ground operations. The next model purchased by the Americans was the F-4D. 825 planes of this model were manufactured, but the USAF wanted an even better model, equipped with an integral cannon, among other things.
F-4E
This model, which took off on its maiden flight on June 30th 1967, became the leading Phantom model, with 1,389 planes built. The plane, which serves in the US Air Force and other air forces, is different from earlier models in that it has an integral cannon, as well as improved systems that give it an added edge in air-to-air and air-to-ground operations. One important addition made was the plane's ability to employ precision guided weapons. The 4FE's are capable of carrying different types of laser target designators, including the Pave Tack, considered to be one of the best of its kind. The F-4E carries laser guided bombs and guided missiles of different types.
F-4G
The F-4G 'Wild Weasel' is the Phantom's most advanced model. The plane, which took off on its maiden flight on December 6th 1975, was specifically developed as an anti-SAM weapon. The USAF purchased 116 of these planes, and they were used in the Gulf War.
RF-4E
In this model the cannon was removed and various cameras and sensors retrofitted, enabling it to carry out both day and nighttime tactical reconnaissance missions. The RF-4E's generally take to the skies armed with just air-to-air missiles for self defense, but if called upon they are also capable of carrying out air-to-ground strikes.
150 RF-4E's were manufactured, and more than half were sold to the German Luftwaffe. Other RF-4E's are in use in the air forces of Iran, Greece and Turkey - as well as Heyl Ha'avir..
Kurnas 2000
In 1980, the IAF embarked upon the initial planning phase of the project for upgrading the Kurnas. On July 15th 1987 the first prototype of the improved plane took off. It was dubbed the Kurnas 2000.

المقاتلة Baz-2000 (Baz Meshopar)

Primary Role Air superiority fighter
Original USA
Baz-2000 (Baz Meshopar) - Israel

Dimensions Wingspan: 13.05 m
Length: 19.43 m
Height: 5.63 m
Wing area: 56.48 sq. m
Capabilities Maximum speed: Mach 2.5
Weight Empty: 14,379 kg, Max. loaded: 36,781 kg
Power Plant 2 Pratt & Whitney F100-PW-220 engines with 10,637 kg. thrust each
Weapon Vulcan 6-barrel 20 mm. cannon with 970 rounds; air-to-air missiles: Sparrow, AMRAAM, Sidewinder, Python 3 and Python 4; air to ground bombs like Popeye.
Models
The different F-15 models that have been developed over the years can be divided into two groups: the single seaters, and the tandem seaters, which were intended for training purposes but retain their operational readiness.
F-15A
First took off in 1972. 385 planes were manufactured, which serve in the US and Israeli Air Forces.
F-15B
The tandem-seat model of the plane, which first took to the air in July 1973. It serves for training pilots, although it has the same combat effectiveness as the A model.
60 B models fly in the American and Israeli air forces. Almost 100 planes have been produced.
F-15C
Maiden flight: February 1979. The model is equipped with new engines and improved avionics, and can carry a very large amount of fuel. In addition, the F-15C can carry conformal fuel tanks, which enhance its range without detracting from other aspects of its performance.
In June of 1985, the plane's systems were upgraded as part of an overall improvement program which included the radar, weapons controls and EW (electronic warfare) systems. 488 planes of this model are currently flying, in the air forces of the USA, Saudi Arabia and Israel.
F-15D
The F-15D was developed alongside the C model as a tandem seat version, with 61 planes manufactured and supplied to Israel, Saudi Arabia, Japan and the US.
F-15J
The J is the Japanese version of the F-15, based on the C model, with the DJ model being the Japanese version of the F-15D. The J is manufactured under license in Japan by Mitsubishi, and over 300 planes have been produced.
F-15E
The newest version of the plane, known as the 'Strike Eagle'. A tandem seat attack plane for quality attack missions in any weather conditions, it is based on the tandem seat F-15B. 200 F-15E's have been assembled. There are two additional offshoots of this plane - the F-15S and the F-15I. The F-15S is a diminished capability version of the F-15E, developed specifically for Saudi Arabia. It lacks some of the LANTIRN and radar options, and does not have an advanced EW system. The F-15I - called 'Ra'am' ('Thunder') in Hebrew - was developed especially for Israel. The first two planes landed in Israel in January of 1998.
Baz-2000 (Baz Meshopar)
In 1995 Heyl Ha'avir embarked upon the the 'Baz-2000' program for improving the F-15s and readying them for battlefield of the 21st century. The program will involve thorough changes in the avionics systems (expected cost - $90 million) and is to be completed in the first years of the new decade. The improvements include upgrading the cockpit controls that display data received from the radar and additional sensors that the plane is fitted with. The old weapons computer will be replaced by a newer model, of the kind that will be installed in the F-15I's. At the end of the improvement process, the F-15s will be fitted with avionics on a level similar to that of the F-16's.
